One of the most important retirement planning decisions relates to Medicare. When someone approaches the age of 65, they are bombarded with a 130-page Medicare & You Guidebook from CMS, marketing mailers, commercials, and anecdotes from friends and family.  This can be a very stressful time, as many questions arise, such as: when do I need to sign up and what will it cost me?; what are the different “Parts”?; and, what plan is right for me?

Even if you are already enrolled in Medicare, we are approaching the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) which is the only time in a year you can switch a Medicare Advantage Plan or Part D Prescription Drug Plan.  Depending on where you live, there could be over 100 different combinations of Medicare Plans to choose from.  This year, there are additional variables to consider:

  • Medicare impacts from COVID-19: Changes to out-of-pocket costs, Telehealth services, enrollment flexibilities, and more.
  • Part D Senior Savings Model: Reduces copays in 2021 for certain medications for chronic conditions (e.g. Insulin).
